Horse Clipping 101

Horse Clipping 101: Everything You Need to Know

1. Types of Horse Clipping

  • Full Clip: Removes most of the horse’s coat, leaving just the legs and sometimes the head. Ideal for horses that are stabled during winter but still worked regularly.
  • Blanket Clip: Removes hair from the neck, body, and chest, leaving the saddle and legs unclipped. Great for horses in moderate work.
  • Trace Clip: A partial clip along the horse’s sides, chest, and neck. Ideal for horses with lighter workloads, providing some warmth while allowing cooling.
  • Hunter Clip: Similar to the blanket clip, but the legs are fully clipped for a sleeker look, often used for competition horses.

2. Why Clip Your Horse?

  • Comfort: Helps horses stay cool after exercise and prevents overheating.
  • Hygiene: Reduces sweating and the buildup of dirt in the coat.
  • Health: Aids in maintaining a clean coat and helps with the prevention of skin infections.

3. Tools Needed for Clipping

  • Clippers: Electric clippers are the most common, with various speeds and blade options.
  • Blades: Choose based on the type of clip you want to achieve. Fine-toothed blades are for a smooth finish, while coarse ones work for thicker coats.
  • Lubricant & Cleaner: Keep your clippers clean and oiled for smooth operation.
  • Aftercare Products: Moisturizers or coat sprays to soothe the skin and keep the coat healthy after clipping.

4. When to Clip

  • Seasonal Timing: Most clipping is done in the fall or early winter to help horses adjust to indoor environments or when the weather turns cold.
  • Activity Level: If your horse works hard regularly and sweats a lot, it may benefit from a clip year-round.

5. Aftercare

  • Moisturize: Apply coat sprays or balms to keep the skin from drying out.
  • Check for Cuts or Irritation: Always inspect your horse’s skin after clipping.
  • Maintain Your Clippers: Clean and oil blades regularly for sharpness and longevity.
