Show clip vs Welfare clip
Welfare Clip: All about keeping your horse comfortable, cool, and content — ideal for horses who aren’t showing and simply need relief from their winter coats.
- A neat finish, but not focused on show-perfect detail
- Quick and kind – takes about 30–90 mins depending on your horse
- Perfect for horses that: get hot or sweaty easily, are sensitive or don’t love long clipping sessions, or aren’t judged on appearance
Show Clip: Perfect for horses headed to competition, show clips are all about polish, precision, and presentation.
- Detailed finish for the show ring
- Takes 1–3 hours depending on the clip and your horse
- Best for horses that: compete regularly, stand well for intricate work, or need to look their best for judges
Does my horse need a bath first and why?
Does my horse need a bath first and why?
A pre-clip bath is essential for a smooth and neat finish as well as ensuring no damage to your horses skin our our clippers/blades. A dirty coat will cause track lines and uneven patches on your horses coat.
It is also essential that your horse is also dry so we recommend bathing the day before and rugging with a clean rug until their appointment.
When due to weather bathing is an issue you can place a warm damp cloth and coat conditioner over each area of your horse. Leaving it there for a few minutes can draw dirt out from the skin however this is no substitute to a full bath when weather is not an issue.
Does my horse need to be sedated?
Does my horse need to be sedated?
We do not require your horse to be sedated however, if your horse does require sedation you must either have your vet administer it or be able to supply and administer it yourself. We do not supply or administer sedation of any kind.
Do we need power?
Do we need power?
No we use battery powered Heiniger Saphir clippers which are fully portable and run on a rechargeable batteries. We carry enough sets of clippers and batteries to last roughly 8 hours of run time without recharging.
Why do we use the equipment we do?
Why do we use the equipment we do?
We have carefully selected our range of equipment to best suit both our clients and us. Our clippers are quieter than traditional large animal clippers with just as much power and fewer vibrations. This means that we can provide a more pleasant experience for your horse. We also don't use mains powered clippers as the power cord can become dangerous around a nervous horse.
How do I look after my horses coat after clipping?
How do I look after my horses coat after clipping?
A proper groom or bath post clipping is crucial for your horse to prevent leftover itchy hairs. We recommend you use our coat conditioner every other day for a week to help the coat settle and replenish skin oils. Also, provide suitable rugs for warmth post-clipping.
What if there is lines?
What if there is lines?
When your horse is clipped, you may notice light lines on his coats from the clippers. This is because clippers can unsettle the hair follicle, and it will retain the shape of the clipper blade teeth. The skin and coat need a few days to settle back down to where they were before clipping which is why our coat conditioner is recommended.
A distinction exists between a poor clip job and a coat that requires time to settle. A bad clip job occurs when the blades have difficulty picking up the hair, leaving varying lengths behind. The primary cause of a bad clip job is a horse with unclean skin.
